Beauty And Fashion Influencer Candace Marie Shows Us How To Turn Braids Into A Work Of Art

"Episode 1 Hair Me Out"

This post is in partnership with Ulta Beauty.

Candace Marie, like many Black women, has been on a journey with her hair. From hot combs to cornrows, she’s tried and done it all. As fate would have it, hair has become her signature ingredient, and if you follow her, you know her style switch-ups are anything but basic (trust me, she never disappoints!)

During the very first episode of our “Beautiful Soul” series in partnership with Ulta Beauty, xoNecole founder Necole Kane sat down with Candace as she puts a sweet spin on her cornrows. Before braiding the top of her braids into a heart pattern, Candace shows us how she preps her hair, adding a surge of moisture and scalp protection. Once the braids are complete, she’ll then walk us through how she maintains and wraps her hair to keep the style protected and looking fresh.

The social media consultant and influencer has an impressive career in luxury fashion, having lent her talents to big brands like Prada, Parkwood, and Barney’s New York. She eventually took a leap of faith and became an entrepreneur, launching her own brand. She’s also giving back through her organization Black In Corporate, which aims to create a safe space for Black women and men who seek relief, support, and a sense of community within their jobs. Candace is one of Ulta Beauty’s MUSE 100 honorees, which celebrates 100 inspiring Black voices in beauty. Ulta Beauty recognizes Candace as a luminous leader. She’s taking her years of experience in corporate luxury fashion and sharing it to help other Black creatives succeed.

Watch as Necole and Candace chat through their most cherished hair memories and can’t-live-without routine in this fun “Get Ready With Me” segment.

Meagan Good Reflects On One Year With Jonathan Majors: 'I Feel Free'

Actress Meagan Good and actor Jonathan Majors are celebrating a significant milestone—their first year as a couple.

This relationship emerged following major life changes for both individuals. Prior to the pair's whirlwind romance, Good had ended her nearly decade-long marriage to producer and motivational speaker DeVon Franklin.

Meanwhile, Majors faced his own struggles. In March 2023, the Creed III star experienced a turbulent breakup with actress Grace Jabbari. This split led to Majors' arrest and subsequent charges of assault and harassment. Two months later, in May 2023, Majors and Good sparked dating rumors when they were spotted together. Their relationship captured public attention mainly due to the actor's legal troubles.

For as long as I can remember, I was never the little girl who dreamed of a wedding dress, a house with a white picket fence, or having babies.

And that’s not to say I don’t want those things, I do. As a daughter of immigrants, I was always motivated for excellence and highly career-driven. My father constantly instilled the importance of education and a high-earning career before starting a family. Simply because he had to repeat college in the United States as his international college degree was not recognized. And my father didn’t migrate to the U.S. for me not to succeed.

What-your-hair-can-tell-you-about-your-health

As someone who has been a naturalista for many, many years now (minus when I took a break to rock a modified mohawk and so I relaxed it), I would argue with just about anyone who didn’t think that very few things in this life will teach you more about yourself, your level of self-discipline and patience and how to figure out what works best, no matter what everyone else is doing, than our hair.

New-moms-postpartum-sex-after-delivery

Back when I was the teen mom director for the local chapter of a national non-profit organization, I decided to become a doula. One reason was that I couldn’t stand how disrespectfully dismissive a lot of doctors were towards pregnant teenagers (how you gonna pre-schedule C-sections in girls who are in their first trimester?). My second reason was to do some healing from my own past pregnancy choices (check out “Why I Named The Children I Aborted”). Over time, another reason was that when a woman has a child, she needs support for more than just birthing her baby.
