The Best Black-Owned Moisturizers To Keep Your Skin Hydrated This Winter
Cold weather ain't no joke.
A while ago, my husband looked at my feet and before he could try and judge, I told him, "It's been a long winter." He was like, "More like a hard life." I couldn't even get offended because I knew that I, like many other ladies, let their feet go on a downward decline during the cooler months with the excuse that very few people, if any, will see them. It's the same thing for unshaven legs (but that's another topic).
The bottom line is just because it's cold outside, doesn't mean our melanin has to suffer. In fact, taking care of our skin and keeping it moisturized will call for less makeup work when summer starts peeking its head around again. And who knows more about keeping melanin on point than our fellow African-Americans?
We've taken the beauty industry by storm and this time of year is perfect to support Black-owned beauty lines with amazing products that keep our bodies moisturized all year long.
Jacq’s Organics
Let me just start by saying one of Jacq's Organics mottos is, "We're here to hydrate your skin when the thirst is real." What's even more appealing is the fact that all of her products are vegan and organic. So, if you're living a plant-based life, this is absolutely a brand you should consider supporting. The owner, Barbara Jacques, is pretty much superwoman because she actually launched the brand after her fight with a tumor; when she realized how much beauty products she was using impacted her health. How amazing is she? Now, let's talk about these products. For skin moisture, she has key oils like The High Priestess Beauty Booster that heals and restores the skin. The True Believer, which gives the skin much-needed nutrients and helps improve collagen. Lastly, The Protectors, a 'Biotin Beauty Booster' that feeds your skin with bio-active plant nutrients.

Smile, Sis! These Five Improvements Can Upgrade Your Oral Hygiene Instantly
This article is in partnership with Sensodyne.
Our teeth are connected to so many things - our nutrition, our confidence, and our overall mood. We often take for granted how important healthy teeth are, until issues like tooth sensitivity or gum recession come to remind us. Like most things related to our bodies, prevention is the best medicine. Here are five things you can do immediately to improve your oral hygiene, prevent tooth sensitivity, and avoid dental issues down the road.
1) Go Easy On the Rough Brushing: Brushing your teeth is and always will be priority number one in the oral hygiene department. No surprises there! However, there is such a thing as applying too much pressure when brushing…and that can lead to problems over time. Use a toothbrush with soft bristles and brush in smooth, circular motions. It may seem counterintuitive, but a gentle approach to brushing is the most effective way to clean those pearly whites without wearing away enamel and exposing sensitive areas of the teeth.
2) Use A Desensitizing Toothpaste: As everyone knows, mouth pain can be highly uncomfortable; but tooth sensitivity is a whole different beast. Hot weather favorites like ice cream and popsicles have the ability to trigger tooth sensitivity, which might make you want to stay away from icy foods altogether. But as always, prevention is the best medicine here. Switching to a toothpaste like Sensodyne’s Sensitivity & Gum toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth will help build a protective layer over sensitive areas of the tooth. Over time, those sharp sensations that occur with extremely cold foods will subside, and you’ll be back to treating yourself to your icy faves like this one!
3) Floss, Rinse, Brush. (And In That Order!): Have you ever heard the saying, “It’s not what you do, but how you do it”? Well, the same thing applies to taking care of your teeth. Even if you are flossing and brushing religiously, you could be missing out on some of the benefits simply because you aren’t doing so in the right order. Flossing is best to do before brushing because it removes food particles and plaque from places your toothbrush can’t reach. After a proper flossing sesh, it is important to rinse out your mouth with water after. Finally, you can whip out your toothbrush and get to brushing. Though many of us commonly rinse with water after brushing to remove excess toothpaste, it may not be the best thing for our teeth. That’s because fluoride, the active ingredient in toothpaste that protects your enamel, works best when it gets to sit on the teeth and continue working its magic. Rinsing with water after brushing doesn’t let the toothpaste go to work like it really can. Changing up your order may take some getting used to, but over time, you’ll see the difference.
4) Stay Hydrated: Upping your water supply is a no-fail way to level up your health overall, and your teeth are no exception to this rule. Drinking water not only helps maintain a healthy pH balance in your mouth, but it also washes away residue and acids that can cause enamel erosion. It also helps you steer clear of dry mouth, which is a gateway to bad breath. And who needs that?
5) Show Your Gums Some Love: When it comes to improving your smile, you may be laser-focused on getting your teeth whiter, straighter, and overall healthier. Rightfully so, as these are all attributes of a megawatt smile; but you certainly don’t want to leave gum health out of the equation. If you neglect your gums, you’ll start to notice the effects of plaque buildup, which can irritate the gums and cause gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease. Seeing blood while brushing and flossing is a tell-tale sign that your gums are suffering. You may also experience gum recession — a condition where the gum tissue surrounding your teeth pulls back, exposing more of your tooth. Brushing at least twice a day with a gum-protecting toothpaste like Sensodyne Sensitivity and Gum, coupled with regular dentist visits, will keep your gums shining as bright as those pearly whites.
The Viral Haircare Products That Keep This Trichologist Coming Back For More
"TikTok made me buy it" is a common phrase thrown around that references the influence TikTok has on purchasing habits. On an app that rarely gatekeeps, one viral video can put you onto a product you never knew you needed, and just like that, you're waiting in line for a hole-in-the-wall recommendation or adding a couple of "miracle" cleansers to your cart, or even feeling the compulsive need to cop a juicer directly from the app through TikTok Shop. Suffice it to say, it can be easy to get lost in the information overload as you're constantly exposed to different things to try.
Someone helping people to sift through the noise of what is and what isn't worth the hype is WTS Certified Trichologist Angela Onuoha. In one of her recent uploads to her TikTok platform, Curlbellaa, the creator shared her picks for viral TikTok haircare products. As a hair and scalp specialist, the products below are her expert-approved recommendations:

TikTok Viral Haircare Products a Trichologist Recommends
OUAI Detox Shampoo
OUAI
Get rid of product buildup and prepare to give your scalp the detox of its life with this detox clarifying shampoo by OUAI. And it gets a "chef's kiss" from Angela, who recommends OUAI Detox Shampoo "if you want a clean start of the scalp, and it's actually also great if you have oily scalp."
K18 Hair Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask
K18 Hair
Clinically reverse hair damage on a molecular level in less than four minutes with the K18 Biomimetic Leave-In Molecular Repair Hair Mask. The strengthening and restorative leave-in mask currently has over 11 billion views on TikTok, and rightfully so. Its stated ability to "repair damage from bleach + color, chemical services, and heat" is something that has been supported by many who have used it, including Angela, who has recommended the product to her audience a lot.
Angela says the mask "is the way to go" if you want to repair your hair damage "on a molecular level." She explains in her video that "a little goes a long way" and that "you can leave it on so there's not a ton of steps that you need to do to repairing your hair."
Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray
Color Wow's Dream Coat Supernatural Spray doesn't have its name for no reason. The "#1 anti-frizz treatment" features technology that blocks humidity and an anti-frizz formula that leaves the hair smooth, glossy, and "waterproof." Angela assures her viewers that "everything that you see on those videos where water glides off the hair- that is actually what you want when it comes to your hair to protect it."
She recommends the product for your hair "if you like heat styling and you like a very sleek look and also want to smooth out the cuticle and fill in the gaps."
The Ordinary Multi - Peptide Serum for Hair Density
The Ordinary
Angela calls this scalp serum by The Ordinary a must because of its price point and its ability to penetrate the scalp for a more intense treatment. The concentrated lightweight formula is a leave-in that can be applied daily to the scalp. "It has multi-peptides in them, so they penetrate a little bit deeper into the scalp."
Though she calls the product "really nice" in her video, she also warns that "even though it's for density, it creates the 'appearance' of thicker and fuller hair." The keyword there is "appearance," but overall, it's still a win for the trichologist.
