I Tried It

It's August 2020 and I'm still Black. My melanin is still popping, my life still f*cking matters, and I'm still #BuyingBlack.

For this month's segment of My Favorite Things, I've chosen to focus on Black-owned self-care and beauty products that I've tried and can't live without. Along with a dope AF custom coffee mug bought on Etsy gifted to me by my best friend, I'll give you the tea on exactly why The Crayon Case's super-pigmented Matte Book Eyeshadow Palette is everything you didn't know you needed.

Personalized Best Friend Mug By Yeshorra Designz ($17)

My best friend is my soulmate. We are so different and so alike at the same damn time, that it only makes sense that she would give me the perfect birthday present.

Just like the baby pink AirPods case and matching keychain that she surprised me with last year, this custom BFF coffee mug is everything I didn't know I needed. Purchased from Black-owned craft business Yeshorra Designz, this ceramic mug was designed with both of our names and matching illustrations. As someone who needs something warm to drink every damn morning, this mug features a no-heat handle that was perfect for meeting all of my coffee- and tea-related needs.

The Matte Book Eyeshadow Palette By The Crayon Case ($25)

As I walk into my 27th year of life, I'm learning to be proud of my strengths and accept my weaknesses, one of which is doing my own makeup. I've watched tutorials and bought all the brushes in the world, but the way my anxiety is set up, ain't nobody got time to recreate these beautiful ass makeup challenges that y'all are doing on the internets.

Luckily, New Orleans influencer Supa Cent has a line of melanin-friendly beauty products that are perfect for beauty enthusiasts-in-training. After reading reviews of The Crayon Case's best-selling eyeshadow palette, I decided to purchase The Matte Book for my birthday and I was not disappointed.

Featuring an array of highly-pigmented shades, I'm able to easily recreate expert looks without feeling overwhelmed and, since a little goes a long way, I'm convinced I'll truly get my money's worth from this palette.

The Honey Pot Plant-Based Foaming Feminine Wash ($15)

After starting a socially conscious wildfire, going viral, and amassing more than $1 million dollars in sales, The Honey Pot's feminine care products became hot in these streets and I'm here to let you know that you can believe the hype. Although I was a sister in the Summer's Eve struggle for years, I have now made the decision to stop sabotaging my pH balance by making better choices when it comes to my feminine care products and The Honey Pot has allowed me to do exactly that.

While the collection is usually sold out in literally every Target in the city of Denver, I finally had a chance to try out The Honey Pot's paraben-free Foaming Wash and now that I'm rocking with this Black-owned brand, my honeypot is never going back.

Mielle's Rice Water Split End Therapy ($10)

Pretty Honore/xoNecole

In the past few years, the tradition of using rice water for hair growth and retention has made a resurgence online, quickly becoming a must-have haircare and beauty hack for naturalistas all over the country and on June 1st, Black-owned hair care brand Mielle released a collection of products that have helped me get my hair retention game all the way together.

After months of chemical and heat damage, my hair is fussy and fragile AF, but with Mielle's new Rice Water collection, I've been able to prevent breakage and give my split ends a much-needed boost. Although their rosemary- and grape-infused Rice Water Split End Therapy is currently sold out online, you can be notified when it hit shelves again by clicking here.

GTC Daily Leave-In By Rucker Roots ($14)

Thanks to Rucker Roots, it was 2020 when I learned I needed to incorporate carrots and ginger into my haircare routine because their GTC Daily Leave-in has my tresses out here thriving. Perfect for both heat styling and protective styles, this biotin-infused leave-in conditioner is the perfect lightweight solution for dry, damaged curls.
