TMI Alert (but I mean, considering the topic, it’s kind of whatever, right?): As someone who has a bowel movement once a day (usually in the morning), I used to be envious of an ex-boyfriend who would have one, like clockwork, about an hour after every meal. In fact, it wasn’t until I did some research on the frequency of pooping that I discovered that both of us were rolling as we should be; that it’s actually “normal” to number two anywhere between three times a day (like him) to three times a week (interesting).
For the record, bowel movements should also have the consistency of toothpaste and resemble the shape of your intestines. Something less frequentor harder (or dryer) can be a sign of constipation.
Ah, yes, constipation. What exactly causes this type of health-related issue that affects roughly four million Americans on an annual basis? Dehydration, a poor diet (including low fiber and/or too much fat or sugar), a lack of exercise, certain medications, and a drastic change in one’s lifestyle due to things like pregnancy or aging can all play a role. That’s why it’s important to pay close attention to the consistency of your own bowel movements along with a shift in your daily habits. If you discover that you are constipated, there are some simple things that should be able to bring you some much-needed relief before relying on a laxative or enema.
If, after trying these 10 suggestions, you don’t see a change within a week or so, make an appointment to see your doctor. Sometimes constipation can be connected to an underlying health condition, and either way, toxins filling up your system is only going to make you feel increasingly — pardon the pun — crappy.
Anyway, here are some natural ways to (hopefully) feel better in no time.
Jeffrey Coolidge
1. Leave Dairy Alone
Did you know that the proteins found in cow’s milk have the ability to literally slow down your bowel movements? Not only that, but since dairy can also cause inflammation in many people, that’s another reason why it can make it difficult for you to poop on a consistent basis. If you add to that the fact that more medical professionals are speaking out about the saturated fats and link to heart disease, acne, and even cancer that dairy can trigger in your system, you are far better off either reducing your dairy intake or (at least) going with a milk alternative from time to time. Oat milk is a personal fave of mine. Ironically, one reason why is because it’s a good source of fiber, something that we all need in order to stay regular.
2. Up Your Probiotic Intake
There are so many reasons why it’s a good idea to take a probiotic on a consistent basis. One of them is it keeps your gut in good condition while your body is processing your foods. Another? It helps to shorten the time that it takes for your colon to do its thing. The end result is you having less of a chance of becoming constipated; especially if you are pregnant or you are currently taking medications that have constipation as a side effect. Again, a probiotic supplement is bomb; however, you can also eat foods that are rich in probiotics too. Some of those include fermented foods like yogurt, pickles, fermented olives, cottage cheese, and pickled onions.
3. Take an Omega Supplement
As someone who has a cocktail of vitamins that I consume on a daily basis, I prefer to take them at night. One reason is so I can sleep through any minor discomfort that the combination may potentially cause my stomach (for instance, I take a gentle iron supplement that likes to show out sometimes). Another is because I can always tell the difference between when I take my evening primrose oil supplement and when I don’t.
Most definitely, when there is an oil that lubricates your system for a few hours, that can help having a number two a lot easier for you. The reason why I shouted out an omega supplement, specifically, for this is because it also contains properties that help to decrease bodily inflammation. A win all the way around.

4. Drink Some Lemon Water
It honestly can’t be said enough that 75 percent of Americans are chronically dehydrated. That’s problematic as hell because your body needs fluids in order to keep your hormones balanced, give your organs the oxygen that they need, lubricate your joints, moisturize your skin and hair, produce saliva and moisture for your eyes, and so much more — including helping your system to properly digest your food and get rid of waste.
The reason why lemon water is a fan fave for many is because not only does water help keep your intestines in good working order, but lemon juice contains the antioxidant vitamin C; thus lemon water has the ability to actually pull more water into your gut. If the lemon water is hot, that’s even better. Hot water has a reputation for making the digestive process easier on your body (drink this before going to bed in order to get the best results).
5. Sip on Some Slippery Elm Tea
If you’re a fan of herbal teas (check out “10 'Uncommon' Teas You Should Add To Your Stash (& Why)”), you’ve got to add slippery elm tea to your stash. For one thing, it’s great for soothing a sore throat or healing a cough. It also has a solid reputation for working as a mild diuretic and reducing symptoms related to heartburn as well as ones that are associated with irritable bowel disease (IBD). That’s because it contains antioxidants and other properties that coat your intestines, again, making it easier for you to have bowel movements.
6. Or an Apple and Banana Smoothie
If you’ve always heard that fiber helps to keep you regular yet you’ve never really known why, probably the quickest and easiest way to explain it is fiber has a way of increasing both the weight and size of your bowel movements while making them softer (and therefore, easier to pass) too — and hey, the fewer toxins that are in your system, the less of a chance that you will be diagnosed with colon cancer up the road (because fiber has been proven to be a preventative carbohydrate in that lane).
That’s why it can be a good idea to indulge in a homemade smoothie that’s made from a highly fibrous fruit like apples and/or bananas (or berries, avocados, pears, kiwi, or mango) a couple of times a week. Just make sure to not overdo it as far as fiber is concerned. In this case, too much of a good thing can also result in bloating, gas, and yes, constipation. Twenty-five grams a day for women (and 38 grams a day for men) will get you just what you need.

7. Do Some Yoga
Aside from some changes that you can make in your diet, there are some lifestyle tips that can be helpful for you as well. For one thing, if you don’t already do yoga yet constipation is an issue for you, so why not give it a shot? Not only does it help to reduce stress, and all of the twists and turns that your body goes through to get into certain positions, it can also help to “manipulate” (in a good way) your intestines so that you can have bowel movements more easily. Ones like the half-spinal twist and cobra pose (which you can see here) are directly attributed to making going to the bathroom a smoother process for you.
8. Give Yourself a Colonic Massage
There is nothing like a good old-fashioned massage. Well, when constipation is an issue, consider giving yourself an abdominal or colonic massage. When it comes to a colonic one, specifically, it’s beneficial because it can help to relieve gas, reduce intestinal blockages, and get rid of the abdominal fluid that could be the underlying cause of why you’re so constipated.
Another tip? If you apply some fennel oil (along with a carrier oil like rosemary) to your abdominal region and massage your lower tummy in circular motions, two or three times a day, that can help to bring constipation relief within a couple of days. You can watch a video on how to properly perform a colonic massage here.
9. Shift Your Posture (on the Toilet)
As a doula, I’ll never understand why (some) doctors will encourage women to try and push out their babies while being on their backs. My running statement for that is, “Who has a bowel movement while lying on their back?”. And that is the main point here. If what you’re experiencing is an occasional bout of constipation, try shifting your posture a bit while you’re on the toilet.Leaning forward, tilting your hips at a 60-degree angle, orputting your feet on a footstool (so that your knees are higher than your hips) are all positions that can help you to poop faster and easier.
10. Chew Some Sugar-Free Gum
If this is your “something new” for the day — hey, I totally get it.Word on the street is that if you chew on some sugar-free gum, it could help to “get things moving” sooner. The method behind the madness is this type of gum contains the ingredient sorbitol which acts as a mild laxative. The main things to keep in mind with this “hack” is 1) you will probably have to chew more than one piece to get results, and 2) you shouldn’t constantly rely on this because too much sorbitol could also cause diarrhea.
But if you like to chew gum and you also apply a few of these other tips at the same time, there’s a pretty good chance that constipation will be a thing of the past. So, get to — again, pardon the pun — moving on them, sis.

Different puzzle pieces are creating bigger pictures these days. 2024 will mark a milestone on a few different levels, including the release of my third book next October (yay!).
I am also a Professional Certified Coach. My main mission for attaining that particular goal is to use my formal credentials to help people navigate through the sometimes tumultuous waters, both on and offline, when it comes to information about marriage, sex and relationships that is oftentimes misinformation (because "coach" is a word that gets thrown around a lot, oftentimes quite poorly).
I am also still super devoted to helping to bring life into this world as a doula, marriage life coaching will always be my first love (next to writing, of course), a platform that advocates for good Black men is currently in the works and my keystrokes continue to be devoted to HEALTHY over HAPPY in the areas of holistic intimacy, spiritual evolution, purpose manifestation and self-love...because maturity teaches that it's impossible to be happy all of the time when it comes to reaching goals yet healthy is a choice that can be made on a daily basis (amen?).

The Fall Staples It Girls From Coast To Coast Are Already Wearing
When it comes to trends, It girls lead, they don’t follow. Keeping one finger on the pulse of fashion and the other on their instincts, it’s their innate ability to dress to the beat of their own heart that makes them stand out amongst everyone else around them.
These women are ahead of their time, forecasting what will eventually be adopted by the masses often years in advance. In most cases, buying into trending items is just a by-product of their love of fashion, however, it's never the key ingredient of a memorable outfit.
As we transition from summer to fall, there’s no need to spend too many coins curating a brand new seasonal wardrobe, especially in this economy. Instead of shopping targeted ads, we interviewed fashion-forward influencers to spark our imagination and gather insight on what they’re already wearing leading into the upcoming season. Keep scrolling to get the scoop on essential items these fashion-forward women are looking forward to wearing this fall.
Helecia Williams, Houston
Comfort
Helecia’s style in three words: “Structured, bold, and explorative.”
Helecia’s outfit inspiration: “I am most interested in comfort as a trend. I am truly enjoying the mix of flats with elevated outfits and the incorporation of street-style elements into the looks. I have seen so much juxtaposition that makes the outfits interesting and intriguing. I love the pairing of fitted caps with [suits] and ballet flats. That mashup is impeccable, and we saw some of that peeking through last fall, and now it's taken on a life of its own.
"As a sneaker lover and comfort sneakers, bringing back flats is just a reimagination of past trends with a fresh twist.”
What color(s) is on Helecia’s fall mood board: “Hands down, red! It's such a bold and bossy color. Now, we see it becoming much more accessible in fashion and realize how easy it is to style and incorporate into a look for that extra pop. It also pairs well with so many other shades and tones. Some of my favorite combos are red and burgundy, red and yellow, and red and brown. Even if you aren't fully convinced that it's the color of the season and still have reservations about it, you can go classic and incorporate it in an accessory or makeup like a red lip.”
Are you bringing anything back from your 2023 fall wardrobe? “I will be returning and recycling all of my 2023 fall wardrobe and just styling it differently or giving it new life. Despite my love for trends, I've curated a wardrobe that I love so I will mix the old in with the new. And not to toot my own horn but a lot of my fashion moments are ahead of the times and still very relevant for this upcoming fall. Expect to see tons of texture, juxtaposition, unexpected color combos, and street style.”
How Helecia is accessorizing this season: “I hate to admit it, but the one trend that has me in a chokehold this fall is bold jewelry, particularly in gold. I've realized that accessories can do wonders, and the Schiaparelli era has me shook. I am a ‘Stan’ of Shop Khoi, a Black-owned jewelry brand that creates some of the most amazing, high-quality fashion jewelry. It just sets off any outfit no matter how simple it may be and easily becomes a conversation piece.”
Courtney Blackwell, New York City
Courtney’s style in three words: “Vintage, oversize, and sexy.”
Courtney’s most anticipated fall fashion items: “The fashion item I am anticipating wearing is vintage leather in all colors!”
Courtney's color picks for fall: “Cherry reds, forest greens, and different shades of gray.”
The trend that has Courtney in a chokehold this season: “Skirts! I’ve never been a skirt girly, well mini skirts girly, but I think I’m going to step it up with the minis this fall.”
Shaniqua Jordan, New York City
Timeless
Shaniqua’s personal styling tip for fall: “I hate to admit it, but the one trend that has me in a chokehold this fall is any oversized outerwear piece, especially oversized blazers. And as basic as it may sound, I can't get enough of them. They instantly elevate any look, and they're so versatile, whether I'm going for a polished vibe or something more casual. Plus, they are perfect for layering as the weather cools down.
"I know most people wouldn't typically opt for suede, but if you've been following my style, you know I'm all about my outerwear. I love adding texture to my looks, even if it's subtle, and a good suede jacket does that for me. The soft texture and rich hues of suede add that cherry on top for any fall look. Whether I'm rocking a bomber style in a jewel tone or a tailored trench in a neutral shade, a suede jacket is one piece I'm looking forward to wearing to elevate my fall wardrobe.”
These colors are all over Shaniqua’s fall mood board: “The colors on my fall mood board are rich earth tones like deep browns and olive greens paired with classic neutrals like camel and cream. I'd like to throw in a pop of butter yellow. I know it might seem more spring-like, but I love how it pairs with deep browns, oxblood, and even grays. It's the perfect way to brighten up those cozy, moody fall vibes. I'm also loving pops of bold jewel tones like emerald and burgundy to add a bit of luxe to the season. These shades give that cozy yet elevated feel I'm always aiming for in my fall wardrobe.”
Shaniqua describes her fall wardrobe in three words: “If I describe my fall wardrobe in three words, they would be chic, layered, and timeless. I love combining unique pieces with a classic touch, creating looks that stand out without trying too hard. It's all about finding that perfect balance between staying true to timeless fashion and adding my own signature flair.”
Are you bringing anything back from your 2023 fall wardrobe? "I am definitely an outfit repeater, so not only will I bring back pieces from my 2023 fall wardrobe, but I also have so many oldies but goodies that I’ll be incorporating into my fall 2024 looks. I think that's what really helps convey my personal style; buying pieces I genuinely love and being able to work them into my style season after season. It's all about longevity and staying true to what I love."
Alasia Allen, Los Angeles
Provocative
Alasia describes her style in three words: “Opulent, sleek, provocative.”
The fashion item Alasia anticipates wearing the most this fall: “I’m really into gloves this season. Whether it’s biker style or long, sleek, leather gloves, they add an interesting take to a fall look.”
The fall colors catching Alasia’s eye: “I’m loving navy or a super deep purple this season so I’ll be adding those into my wardrobe. They’re both so sophisticated and a good alternative to black.”
The fall staple Alaisa plans to bring back from her 2023 wardrobe: “Every year, I wear a shearling coat. It’s timeless, it’s warm, it’s my thing. There’s something very elevating about shearlings that have drawn to me year after year, and that’s what makes them my favorite style of outwear.”
The accessory that has Alasia in a chokehold this season: “Boots. I love a good boot as my go-to accessory for the fall/winter season. My favorites are boots that have a little flair to them and an interesting shape.”

'Bel-Air' Actress Jazlyn Martin On Her Ongoing Identity Crisis And Its Influence On Her Creative Journey
Jazlyn Martin is a triple-threat performer known most for her role as Jackie on Peacock’sBel-Air. Her character’s fiery personality and questionable decisions have led to a few shocking moments in the series and quite a bit of convo on social media.
Now, I’ll be honest: as an avid TV-lover, I was well-prepared to hop on Zoom and jump into all the chatter around Bel-Air and her characters’ decisions. But after listening to her new EP Identity Crisis, I knew there was a lot more to talk about as well. During this exclusive conversation with xoNecole, Jazlyn Martin delved into the challenging journey she’s faced surrounding her identity, newfound fame, and family influence, and how it all plays a part in her art. Check it out!
xoNecole: So I know that your father is in the entertainment world, but when did you realize you shared the same passion?
Jazlyn Martin: I think it was very early on. I was a child who was full of attitude and fearlessness that would go after anything I wanted. I believe seeing my dad pursue music made me realize it was possible. I just had this hunger and fire, and my parents consciously fed and nurtured that - they are always all super supportive of whatever I do. So very, very early on, I was like, I'm meant to do this. And I just was like, I'm a star, and I know I'm a star.
xoN: Actually, let's talk about your family. What are some of your most important values, and how have your family and heritage played a part in shaping those values?
Jazlyn: I mean, my mom is like an angel; she's so graceful and kind, and I've had to work hard to get there. When I was young, I was very abrasive, headstrong, and stubborn. Whereas my mom gives an immense amount of grace in the way she carries herself. I had to learn that.
I think being strong is something I’ve always had. My parents always joke that they don't know where my personality came from. Because my dad is shy and timid and my mom is kind, and I'm a fireball. But my Dad always asked the important industry questions like, “Why do you want to do this?” And that instilled some purpose into me. It really carried me to keep going because it's so easy to be discouraged in this field, but that drive has helped me push through all of the challenges.
xoN: I bet. I have such a respect for actors and the way you all navigate the industry. Speaking of, let’s dig into “Bel-Air.” Were you a fan of the show? Did you have to go back and watch the episodes?
Jazlyn: So I actually did watch the show which is crazy because sometimes I don’t. I saw it was a reboot and was like, ‘Oh no, not another one.’ But I watched the first three episodes, realized how good it was, and ended up watching the whole season. I became a fan, and then a few months later, I booked the role!
I think the imagination is such a beautiful and powerful tool, and I feel like if you create something in your mind, it happens. It's a crazy thing, but I really just created Jackie's world - the house she grew up in, her parents leaving her, and everything. I created why she fell in love with dance. I really came at it from a human approach. If I see it, then the audience can see it.
xoN: Yeah, background plays into so much of how we deal with things, how we interact with people, and everything. And I feel like Jackie gets a lot of backlash. Like, we’ve all had a “Jackie Moment” to be real.
Jazlyn: She gets so much backlash! I just encourage people to give her grace and see the God in her because I do think she tells a lot of Black and brown girls' stories. People project on her, saying she’s too ratchet or hood, and I’m like does that mean she’s not loveable?
We have to be careful of what’s said and put out because Jackie has gone through things that I've never had to go through. The fact that she's alive and still highly functioning is a blessing. So what if she gets a little messy? I love her. Because she’s helped me extend empathy to people I don't necessarily want to or don't think deserve to have it. But she's 17, she's figuring it out, and she doesn't have parents. Like, that's such a huge factor.
"We have to be careful of what’s said and put out because Jackie has gone through things that I've never had to go through. The fact that she's alive and still highly functioning is a blessing. So what if she gets a little messy? I love her."
xoN: You mentioned how your character is viewed, which digs a bit into identity. So I want to talk a little bit about some of the emotional songs on your EP “Identity Crisis.” What inspired the track “Perfect?”
Jazlyn: When I was creating “Perfect,” I already had the EP title. So I kind of mapped out, like, the different conflicts I had in my head and categorized them into seven songs, and so one of my identity crises was being perfect. Because I feel like a lot of men tend to put women on pedestals. They're expected to be perfect - especially when you’re in the limelight. You know, you can't slip up. You can't say the wrong thing. Cancel culture is such a huge thing. And I just wanted to encourage people to give people grace to be themselves because that's not an easy thing to do.
I just wanted to take down this facade that I’m perfect because I never pretended to be. I never wanted to be. I think that's something people have placed on me, that I have it all figured out, I think I just carry it well, but that doesn't mean it's not heavy. I just wanted to be very vulnerable and honest. I think people think “perfect” is a compliment, but I think it's a cage because it doesn't allow room for error. It doesn't allow for you to be human and mess up and fail and take risks. So I just wanted to encourage grace.
xoN: Do you ever feel like you went through an identity crisis?
Jazlyn: I go through one constantly. Growing up, I didn't really have one. But I think as you get older and more aware and cognitive, you know how the world goes, and the world starts telling you who you are, instead of you deciding who you are. And I feel like being mixed played a big role in that, not feeling Black or Mexican enough. I wanted to belong to both worlds but didn’t so I was just “other.” That was an identity crisis in itself.
Also, being introduced to a level of fame has been interesting, too. I think we all go through identity crises all the time because we’re evolving and changing. It’s beautiful, but it’s also scary; you see yourself this one way, and then something happens, and there’s a shift. So yeah, I think it’s something we all go through but no one talks about.
"I think as you get older and more aware and cognitive, you know how the world goes, and the world starts telling you who you are, instead of you deciding who you are. And I feel like being mixed played a big role in that, not feeling Black or Mexican enough. I wanted to belong to both worlds but didn’t so I was just 'other.'"
xoN: I love that. And I know Hispanic Heritage Month is coming up, and you'll be speaking at the New York Latino Film Festival. Talk to me about what that moment means to you and what you hope to bring to the event. *Editor’s note: The interview was conducted before Hispanic Heritage Month began.
Jazlyn: I’m bringing some Afro-Latino-ness! I always grew up seeing Latinos being represented in a very specific way—very Spanish, not very Indigenous looking. So I'm really excited to bring the Black experience, with the Latino experience, to the stage because that's something a lot of people don't know exists.
People are always like, “Are you Black or Latina?” Well, I'm both! We were just dropped off in different parts. I’m excited to speak on that and highlight how prevalent anti-Blackness is within Latino communities. A lot of Afro-Latinos have faced an identity crisis because of it, including myself. It sometimes feels like you’re supposed to hate the other half of who you are.
For me, I held onto that little Black girl inside. I refused to let her go. And that’s what I want to represent when I speak—resilience and acceptance of our full selves. I’m also looking forward to meeting fellow Latino people, especially Afro-Latinos, and sharing our stories. It’s not a narrative that gets much attention, and I’m excited to represent.
xoN: I’m excited for you! Finally, with all the praise and recognition you’re receiving now, what has it been like to transition from working in music, dance, and acting to now being in the spotlight? How have you embraced this new level of fame?
Jazlyn: Um, it's overwhelming. I think that's the best word. Sometimes, I'm joyful, because I'm giving back to the community. People resonate with Jackie's stories and see themselves in her, which I think is the biggest compliment to me. But then sometimes, you know, I feel sad because I'm like, ‘Damn, I'm not doing enough,’ like I should be doing more. It's crazy, the industry is so fast-paced that you don't really try to celebrate wins. It's just a transition, an identity crisis of the like.
