Recently, Amanda Seales was announced as the newest co-host on The Real and you better believe that she brought her conscious AF opinions with her. It's 2020 and not every woman wants to be a wife. In a discussion with the other ladies on the show, Amanda revealed that she's one of those women. While the 38-year-old comedian may see courtship and commitment in her future, she shared that she has no desire to legally tie the knot:

"Marriage is not that — it's not like a goal for me. I think at the end of the day, if it ended up working out that that made sense, fine. If not, we just gon' buy a property together and do a ceremony that says, hey, we only doing us, and that has double meaning."

Women prefer to stay unmarried for a variety of reasons and one of those reasons is because they can, damn it. Along with her desire to keep Uncle Sam TF out of her business (and her relationship), Amanda says that for now, she prefers to stay legally single simply because it's her choice.

While our grandmothers and great-grandmothers faced a much different challenge when it came to forging their own path and living on their own terms, women in the digital age can bring home and cook it too, making the legal aspect of marriage much less necessary for some women:

"I mean, I think at this point in my life, I just don't feel comfortable bringing the government into my relationship. I think there's also, just the fact that we just live in a different time. I think once upon a time, marriage was set as the goal because for a lot of women, just socially, that was our best way at getting access to finances, to safety, to security, but we're in a different era. There's just more options. It's not to say one is better than the other."

Marriage isn't just about a wedding and a ring––it symbolizes a lifetime commitment made by two people under God. When asked if Amanda has concerns about the lack of emotional commitment that comes with being unmarried, she had this to say:

"If we gotta sign a paper for you to be committed to your word, then I feel like you ain't really committed to your word."

Generation To Generation: Courtney Adeleye On Black Hair, Healing, And Choice

This article is in partnership with Target.

For many Black women, getting a relaxer was a rite of passage, an inheritance passed down from the generation before us, and perhaps even before her. It marked the transition from Black girlhood to adolescence. Tight coils, twisted plaits, and the clickety-clack of barrettes were traded for chemical perms and the familiar sting of scalp burns.

A 5-Year Healing Journey Taught Me How To Choose Myself

They say you can’t heal in the same place that made you sick. And I couldn’t.

The year was 2019, and I knew I had to go. My spirit was calling me to be alone and to go alone. It was required in that season. A few months prior, I had quit my job. And it was late 2017 when I had met trauma.

What Loving Yourself Actually Looks Like

Whitney said it, right? She told us that if we simply learned to love ourselves, what would ultimately happen is, we would achieve the "Greatest Love of All." But y'all, the more time I spend on this planet, the more I come to see that one of the reasons why it's so hard to hit the mark, when it comes to all things love-related, is because you first have to define love in order to know how to do it…right and well.

Personally, I am a Bible follower, so The Love Chapter is certainly a great reference point. Let's go with the Message Version of it today:
