The décolletage, the area around the neck and upper chest, is a striking feature that enhances a wide range of outfits year-round. Whether complemented by formal evening wear or casual apparel, this area often draws attention to one's appearance.

Despite its visual significance, the décolletage is frequently overlooked in skincare routines, even as it remains constantly exposed to the sun. This neglect can lead to premature signs of aging and sun damage over time. Very Well Health notes that some effects of sun damage include "wrinkles, age spots, sagging skin, and dryness."

However, by extending skincare efforts and implementing targeted techniques, it's possible to prevent further damage and maintain the décolletage's allure. In this article, xoNecole will break down essential steps to preserve its appearance and ensure it remains a flattering feature for years to come.

Sunscreen

First on the agenda and a crucial element in protecting the décolletage is sunscreen.

The FDA reports that sunscreens, especially those providing broad-spectrum coverage, "help protect against both UVA and UVB rays." For optimal protection, particularly for those who spend significant time outdoors, choosing sunscreen with an SPF value of 15 or higher is advisable.

This level of protection helps reduce the risks of skin cancer and premature aging.

When selecting sunscreen for the décolletage, opt for products designed for sensitive or delicate skin, as this area features a thin layer. Apply the sunscreen generously to any exposed region, including the face, neck, chest, and shoulders.

Limit Time Spent In The Sun

While moderate sun exposure is often recommended to boost mood and vitamin D levels, excessive sun exposure can harm one's skin and increase the risk of skin cancer.

The FDA advises limiting outdoor time between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun's rays are most intense. If limiting sun exposure during these hours isn't possible, taking precautions by always applying sunscreen is crucial.

Retinoids

Next on the list for both preventing premature aging and enhancing the appearance of the décolletage area are retinoids.

Retinoids are chemical compounds derived from vitamin A. These ingredients offer various benefits, including increasing collagen production, reducing wrinkles, brightening skin, and decreasing hyperpigmentation, to name a few.

According to Healthline, retinoid products are available over the counter and by prescription.

To promote improvement in one's skin, individuals can apply the serum daily or every other day, depending on their skin's sensitivity.

Moisturize

Another key to preserving the décolletage's appearance is keeping the skin hydrated with a moisturizer or serum that includes hyaluronic acid.

A study from the National Library of Medicine states that hyaluronic acid can decrease the appearance of wrinkles, improve elasticity, and help maintain a youthful appearance.

To achieve these results, one should moisturize their skin twice daily.

Exfoliate

Last on the list is exfoliating, the process of removing dead skin cells using a mask or specialized product. According to the same Healthline article, to see improvements in the décolletage, it is recommended that individuals exfoliate every few weeks.

What Loving Yourself Actually Looks Like

Whitney said it, right? She told us that if we simply learned to love ourselves, what would ultimately happen is, we would achieve the "Greatest Love of All." But y'all, the more time I spend on this planet, the more I come to see that one of the reasons why it's so hard to hit the mark, when it comes to all things love-related, is because you first have to define love in order to know how to do it…right and well.

Personally, I am a Bible follower, so The Love Chapter is certainly a great reference point. Let's go with the Message Version of it today:
