Here’s Why Angela Bassett Is Not A Fan Of People Telling Her She Looks Good For Her Age

At 63, Angela Bassett is considered one of Hollywood’s most timeless beauties. From her ageless features to her toned body including her immaculate, chiseled arms, Angela has often been praised for her looks as well as her talent. With over 40 years in the entertainment industry, we have witnessed Angela take on an array of roles that many would consider challenging such as her portrayal of Tina Turner in What’s Love Got to Do with It in 1993 to more recently starring on the Fox drama 9-1-1 which reportedly makes her one of the highest-paid actresses on television. (Yes, Black girl magic!)

The mother of two is fearless and she defies age stereotypes. In an interview with InStyle, the legendary actress dished on the importance of taking care of one’s self, being an inspiration to women getting their “groove back” and why she’s not a fan of the phrase, “you look good for your age.”

“Yeah, I think when we take care of ourselves, we do look good for our age, whatever age that is, you know?” she replied. And while working out is good for the physical, it’s also good for your mental, which is something Angela believes in.

“...I always feel stronger when I work out, but it's mind over matter,” she said. “It's something that I need to do for my head, not just for looking good. It's very helpful for my stress level.”

One of Angela’s most memorable roles was Stella in HowStella Got Her Groove Back where she played a successful older woman who goes to Jamaica on vacation and meets a younger man played by Taye Diggs.

Angela notes that to this day, many women share similar stories with her. “... I can't tell you how many times ladies have come up to me and said, 'I got my groove back.'"

“They're embracing their sensuality and youth. In Hollywood, there was a time when people believed that once an actress turns 40, it's over. But no, those things that make us who we are — our sensuality, sexuality, compassion, and intelligence — that doesn't come to an end. It deepens and ripens, you know? It's all in the attitude.”

Angela continues to be an inspiration to women due to her elegance and beautiful storytelling on screen and behind the camera. Currently, the beloved actress is in the process of filming Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Why-do-you-want-to-be-a-wife

Even though it’s my life, sometimes I look at it and totally trip out over certain things.

For instance, even though I am aware that both Hebrew and African cultures put a lot of stock in the name of a child (because they believe it speaks to their purpose; so do I) and I know that my name is pretty much Hebrew for divine covenant, it’s still wild that in a couple of years, I will have been working with married couples for a whopping two decades — and boy, is it an honor when they will say something like, “Shellie, we’ve seen [professionally] multiple people and no one has been nearly as effective as you have been.”
