We’re officially in the thick of summer, which means it’s protective style season.

Not only is it essential to get off those new looks with versatility and ease all summer long, taking care of your hair in the process is also a non-negotiable. If you’re opting for a protective style this season and want to achieve the perfect aesthetic, xoNecole has you covered with our It List routine for braided styles.

Start With A Clean Slate

The key to ensuring protective styles in fact protect your hair is taking care of your strands and scalp. So the number one step is to give your tresses the proper TLC they need before getting your new 'do.

SheaMoisture’s Manuka Honey & Mafura Oil Intensive Hydrate Shampoo and Conditioner can help strengthen strands and moisturize hair ahead of installing braids, to create a good foundation while maintaining this protective hairstyle.

Cleansing the hair properly with a shampoo that hydrates dry hair while also being deeply nourishing helps your tresses become softer and shinier. Pairing it with a conditioner that provides moisture retention, nourishment, and strength to damaged hair, while also easing detangling, will have you thanking us later.

Leave Your Hair Laid

Whether you’re heading to a day party, dancing at a summer wedding, laying out on the beach, or flexing your volleyball skills in the sand, the Jamaican Black Castor Oil Edge Gel will keep your hair laid through any activity.

As important as it is to keep the hair laid, products that prioritize hair health are a major cheat code. With hair care and protection at the top of our list, this product takes things a step further by providing a firm hold without drying out your hair, helping to reduce frizz, all while adding hydration and shine.

And for our It Girls, rocking the bohemian or boho braided look: keep the ends of your braids (and even your leave out) defined with SheaMoisture’s Curl Enhancing Smoothie or Styling Milk. Both products are sure to keep your hair looking defined and hydrated.

Need A Daily Refresher? This Product Is Our Go-To

Hydration is a consistent theme when your hair is in a protective style. And SheaMoisture’s 100 percent Virgin Coconut Oil Leave-In Treatment is an absolute must to help retain the moisture in the hair and keep your looks healthy. This especially comes in handy if you want to rock your braids a bit longer. We’re all looking to get our money’s worth in this economy — plus you can focus those funds on booking your next summer adventure!

Strengthen Your Hair While You Sleep

Every It Girl needs her beauty rest — and you can maintain hair health while you sleep. SheaMoisture’s Strengthening Oil will get the job done for you, locking in hydration for a more resilient scalp barrier while you get some shut eye.

Apply the product directly to the scalp and let it refresh your roots, making the hair stronger while improving length retention thanks to reduced breakage.

Take Your Hair Down With Care

After taking each of these steps, it would be a disservice to your hair to mishandle the takedown process. It’s just as essential for us to bring things back to normal by repairing the hair after it’s been tucked away in braids.

Help your hair bounce back by restoring moisture with the Manuka Honey Mafura Oil Masque, which revitalizes damaged hair, by deeply nourishing it to strengthen and smooth the hair. This product also deeply conditions, helping to create vibrant, healthy-looking hair just in time for your next It Girl moment.

Hmph. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like there is something really weird happening in the fall season air (because winter doesn’t officially begin until December 21) that cuddle season is in full swing while break-up season is as well. In fact, did you know that break-ups are so popular during the holiday season that December 11 is deemed Break-Up Day?

The reasons why relationships shift around this time vary; however, I did both roll my eyes and chuckle when I read that a very popular one is because it’s an easy way to get out of getting one’s significant other a Christmas present. SMDH.

'Constant Reassurance' Is The Relational Orange Flag No One Wants To Address

Read more than scroll. Boy, if there is a motto that I would encourage people to implement, now more than ever in their life, it would be how important it is to read (actual books, researched data and fact-based information) over merely scrolling via social media. Because boy — every time I look out on apps to see what folks are talking about, I don’t know if I’m impressed with or appalled by how many nothing-more-than-emotionalized opinions are so boldly stated when, after five minutes on Google, it’s clear that there are virtually zero facts to back them up.
