33 Morning Rituals To Start Your Day

These 33 morning rituals will help guarantee a good start to your day

Wellness

What's the first thing you did when you woke up this morning?

Did you roll over and check your smartphone? I knew it! Is this what the world has come to? Being a slave to Apple and Android? Come on, we have to do better…

Maintaining balance and growth in my life has always been very high on my list, so capturing ways to contribute to such lifestyle is of high importance to me.

When I open my eyes I'm sure to open a window for some fresh air, do some light reading, make my bed, drink a glass warm water or tea and jot down a few of my thoughts. Sounds peaceful doesn't it?!?!?

Rituals and routines are wonderful, but I still make it point to switch things up a bit every now and then. Some mornings, I just don't want to write or have a cup of tea. When I need to pull in some new inspiration this is the list I choose a replacement ritual from:

  1. Take a few deep breathes and take life in.
  2. Stretch for at least one minute
  3. Give thanks/pray/gratitude
  4. Make up the Bed [every single day]
  5. Eat breakfast [not too big though]
  6. Drink tea
  7. Read a chapter
  8. Write down your thoughts [on paper and not on your phone] or last nights dreams
  9. Take a teaspoon of coconut oil and apple cider vinegar
  10. Open your blinds or curtains
  11. Listen to music that speaks to your temperament
  12. Dance
  13. Verbalize a handful of personal affirmations
  14. Yoga
  15. Work out
  16. Do a steam treatment
  17. Paint your nails
  18. Take a swim
  19. Brisk walk around the block
  20. Write down your goals for the day, week, month and year
  21. Do a goal check up
  22. Practice mindfulness – meditate
  23. Drink lemon water
  24. Laugh
  25. Romp around [hubba hubba– I'm such a creep lol]
  26. Make your lunch
  27. Get some fresh air on your patio or porch
  28. Listen to your favorite podcast or audiobook
  29. Make a smoothie
  30. Smile in the mirror for 20 seconds
  31. Look at bright colors
  32. Straighten up around the house.
  33. Tell yourself in the mirror how smart, beautiful and deserving you are!

Yes, this is a real list that I've doodled in my journal over the last few months.

I understand rituals are meant to be done in a prescribed order, but I'm always been one to shake things up. Let your routine always allow for two to three constants (for me that's eating a hearty breakfast and making the bed) as well as two to three variable rituals that you can switch up depending on your mood. I'm still learning to make number 25, 30 and 33 more permanent.

Hopefully it will serve you well as you journey towards a better you!

What would you add to the list?

It's always good to be able to get a warning or preview of travel experiences before booking a trip. Who wants to spend hard-earned money traveling somewhere only to find that they've gotten themselves into a horrible, unsafe, or unsavory experience that could've been avoided? And if you love to travel or are looking for your next vacay spot, you've probably come across lists detailing the best and worst countries for Black women via your IG Explore page or your YouTube suggestions.

Sunday night was filled with watch parties, buzzing group chats, and never-ending social media posts all in celebration of the beginning of the end to HBO's Insecure. From debates surrounding friendship and relationships to healthy discussions around therapy, postpartum, and office culture, Insecure explored it all, and in a way that felt authentic and incredibly familiar. And while I'm a lover of many different types of television shows, I can honestly say Insecure is just different, special.

It was December of 2009 that I made an impromptu decision to cut my permed hair off. My reason for making that drastic change was due to ending a dating relationship at the time and the painful experience I went through from relaxing my hair in my dorm a couple of months prior. Cutting my hair immediately left me feeling bold yet boy-ish whenever I found myself dressing down or not wearing lavish earrings. After several months experimenting with wearing twist-outs, dyeing it myself (I was extra bold with that) and even getting my first blowout (that later resulted in heat damage), I thought I'd been hiding my beautiful kinks due to laziness.

So, what exactly is K-Beauty? Well, it's not as complicated as it seems or sounds. Essentially, it is a skincare routine that uses Korean beauty products that originates from and is made in Korea. What makes K-beauty special is that the products are created using a Korean beauty philosophy. Unlike some skincare products that yield short-term results, Korean beauty products are designed to work long-term. The idea of long-term skincare isn't new. Dermatologists have always said we can see improvements to the skin in three to six months with consistent treatment and routine.
