Leslie Grace Says She’s Her ‘Own Damn Hero’ After ‘Batgirl’ Gets Scrapped

Leslie Grace reacted to the news that Batgirl had been canceled by Warner Bros. The DC film starring Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon aka Batgirl was unexpectedly scrapped with many pointing the finger at the Warner Bros. and Discovery merger that occurred in May 2021. The merger saw a change in leadership and cost-saving measures according to The Hollywood Reporter.

However, the superhero film was already shot and in post-production and was supposed to be released on HBO Max. The Afro-Latina actress shared an Instagram post that featured several behind the scene moments from the movie and thanked the cast, crew, and fans.

“Querida familia! On the heels of the recent news about our movie “Batgirl,” I am proud of the love, hard work and intention all of our incredible cast and tireless crew put into this film over 7 months in Scotland,” she wrote.

“I feel blessed to have worked among absolute greats and forged relationships for a lifetime in the process! To every Batgirl fan - THANK YOU for the love and belief, allowing me to take on the cape and become, as Babs said best, “my own damn hero!” #Batgirl for life! 🦇”

Warner Bros. also put out a statement regarding their surprising decision. “The decision to not release Batgirl reflects our leadership’s strategic shift as it relates to the DC universe and HBO Max,” the Warner Bros. spokesperson said. “Leslie Grace is an incredibly talented actor and this decision is not a reflection of her performance. We are incredibly grateful to the filmmakers of Batgirl and Scoob! Holiday Haunt and their respective casts and we hope to collaborate with everyone again in the near future.”

In an April 2022 interview with E! News, the In the Heights star opened up about her “responsibility” to represent Latinos in a positive light, especially with the lack of Latino superheroes. "It's such a thing, we haven't seen a lot of Latino superheroes, or actors of Latin descent within the superhero world," the Dominican-American actress said. "So it was such a beautiful opportunity to be granted and a big responsibility as well."

Leslie was reportedly the third Latina to be cast in a DC superhero film.
