As women of color, our skin is our armour to a cold and cruel world. Our skin is the veil that so honestly projects who we are and has the power to define how we feel about ourselves. Black girls and their skin have a special relationship, one that if properly nurtured, can help empower us to create black girl magic every day.

Some of our favorite sorceresses including Kerry Washington, Missy Elliott, and Kelly Rowland have been opening up about how they keep their skin all the way together, and we're taking notes. Former Scandal star, Kerry Washington just gave Glamour the low-down about how she maintains her scandal-worthy beauty and we are here for it. When asked about her routine in a game of 20-ish Beauty Questions she said:

"Daily fish oil supplements, because omega fatty acids work."

This beauty hack can be found at your local pharmacy or Walmart for less than $10 and can work wonders for your hair, nails, and skin. The 42-year-old mother of two has also been candid about her battle with eczema, a common skin condition that's symptoms include rashes, small blisters, and thickened plaques of skin, and says that working with a nutritionist and drinking plenty of water has helped her manage her dermatitis.

Kerry said that she's had eczema since she was 8 years old and had to learn that beauty works from the inside out. She told InStyle in 2014:

"I actually had terrible eczema growing up and had to learn how to manage it. I work with a nutritionist because, to me, beauty is an inside-out thing. I take fish oil pills, drink lots of water, and try not to eat dairy. Those things have really helped my skin."

Among fish oil pills and making changes to her diet, Kerry says that moisturizer and hydration are the keys to keeping your face on fleek. She told Allure that one of the most important lessons that she learned from her mother was to drink enough water.

"Hydration, hydration, hydration. I believe drinking a ton of water is vital to health and wellness. It's so important to have hydration on the inside, but also finding products that can really lock in moisture on the outside. It's all about working internally and externally toward the same goal."

As for her daily routine outside of her glamorous work life, our favorite fixer sticks to concealer and moisturizer.

"And I'd never, ever skip moisturizer—no way—it's too critical. I'm a little bit obsessed with Neutrogena Norwegian Hand Cream. It actually makes my manicure last an extra week. And then hyaluronic acid for my face is everything. I love Neutrogena's new serum. And there's a new Hydroboost gel with SPF in it, which is great, especially during spring and summer."

Kerry said that one of her golden beauty rules was to work internally and externally toward the same goal. Due to stress and changes in the environment, maintaining a proper skincare routine can be hard on a sister, but Kerry reminds us that it's important to work from the inside-out.

Not only is it important that we get the right beauty products, but it's extremely important that you're taking good care of the machinery that helps you operate. Trying out vitamins and supplements could turn your beauty routine from I can't handle this to It's handled.

Hmph. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like there is something really weird happening in the fall season air (because winter doesn’t officially begin until December 21) that cuddle season is in full swing while break-up season is as well. In fact, did you know that break-ups are so popular during the holiday season that December 11 is deemed Break-Up Day?

The reasons why relationships shift around this time vary; however, I did both roll my eyes and chuckle when I read that a very popular one is because it’s an easy way to get out of getting one’s significant other a Christmas present. SMDH.

8 Interesting Facts About Sleep And Your Immune System

While doing a podcast interview a couple of weeks ago, when I said my age, the interviewer complimented me by saying that what I said is not what they would’ve guessed. When they asked what the secret was, the first thing that came out of my mouth was, “Oh, I’m gonna take me a nap.”

I adore sleep. I’ve said before that it’s like what Six Flags is to some people. And really, it’s just a plus that there are so many health benefits from getting plenty of rest. Beauty-wise, science does reveal that getting no less than seven hours a night can slow down signs of aging. Know what else? There are some direct things that sleep — and the lack thereof — can do to your immunity as well.
