Kelly Rowland On Stepping Into Her Own Light After Living In Beyonce's Shadow

When a flower blooms, it does it in the name of growth, not competition, and on a recent episode of The Voice, Kelly Rowland opened up about how keeping that same energy helped her find her own light after living in Beyonce's shadow for what she says was more than a decade.

The con of comparison will have you out here forgetting who TF you are and Kelly recently revealed that in the past, she could totally relate. When giving advice to a contestant who felt constantly overshadowed by his brother's talent, Kelly had this to say:

"I know this feeling. Can you imagine what it's like being in a group with Beyoncé? I would just torture myself in my head. Like, I can't wear this dress because they're going to say it's like Bey. Or, I can't have a song like that because it sounds too much like Bey. They're gonna compare anyways."

Kelly, who has become a full-time mother, entrepreneur, author, and platinum-selling recording artist since her departure from Destiny's Child, said that although she's been able to build a successful career on her own, there were years where she was haunted by the feeling of being "second best". She continued:

"I would be lying if I said 'No, it's never bothered me.' That's bull. There was a whole decade, if I am being completely honest, a decade where it was like the elephant in the room. It was the thing that would constantly be on my shoulder."

As a queen in her own right, Kelly is living proof that talented people aren't exempt from the con of comparison and that's big facts. In a previous interview, the entertainer said that while comparative comments in the media may be unsettling, they've only made her relationship with her former groupmate stronger.

"I think the people wanted those stories for years, and that's just so sad on them because it's not like that. It's so crazy, and I just think it's so sad that we live in a world where people don't want to see women get along and encourage and empower each other, and that's what we do for each other. I definitely think it makes friendship stronger."
