For years, it's felt like our relationship with our hair has been an interesting one. One minute, it's our beauty, and the next, it's something we're self-conscious of.

I remember growing up and hearing my elders say never to cut my hair because long hair was beautiful. When I had a short cut, I remember flinching in the hair salon everytime a flat iron would press up against my scalp, but I endured it so my hair could be straight and my edges would be fly!

Then, I remember chopping off all my hair before I headed off to college, and the limitless stares I got as a result. Finally, I remember the day I went and got my locs started—two years later, and it's still one of the biggest decisions I've made in my life.

It made me wonder how other women see their hair, and if they feel these transformative feelings with it and what that relationship feels like. So I talked to four different women, eager to see how they feel about their hair:

Patrice Peck

Name: Patrice Peck

Title: Beauty Writer

"I did my third big chop last April, so I'm not really new to the natural life. As for my first big chop in 2008, I did that myself with some grocery store scissors while studying abroad in Cape Town, South Africa. I wasn't really nervous, because I'd already developed the 'it's just hair' mindset by that point.

"It was so liberating and empowering to prove to myself that I could do what I want to my body despite what society dictates and still navigate that society confidently. Also, this was before YouTube tutorials were even a thing, so I definitely want to shout out people like Patrice Grell Yursik of Afrobella and the tons of Black girls on Tumblr for providing tons of information, inspiration, and support for my natural hair journey. Oh yeah, when my youngest sister Courtney saw the pic of my new cut on Facebook, she said, 'Looks good! But Mommy's gonna kill you when you get home.' (laughs) My mom didn't even really care, she just teased me (and still does) about how I'm ALWAYS changing up my hairstyles. And guess what? Courtney ended up doing the big chop a few years later too!

"If you wanna cut your hair, I say go for it, go for it, go (Issa voice.) It's always helpful to do research beforehand, so look up articles and videos that share things you ought to know before doing the BC. And on those days where you're feeling like, 'Ugh! Fuck! I'm so ugly! Look at my damn FIVEhead!? Argh why the hell did I do this?!!!?', look up inspiration from natural hair celebs and vloggers and influencers who have hair textures similar to you. I do that often for my 4C hair texture and get so hype when I do! For all the 4C hair girls out there, check out the Instagram account 4CHairChicks and go down the rabbit hole of dope, fly people and their own accounts. Happy screenshotting!"

Hmph. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems like there is something really weird happening in the fall season air (because winter doesn’t officially begin until December 21) that cuddle season is in full swing while break-up season is as well. In fact, did you know that break-ups are so popular during the holiday season that December 11 is deemed Break-Up Day?

The reasons why relationships shift around this time vary; however, I did both roll my eyes and chuckle when I read that a very popular one is because it’s an easy way to get out of getting one’s significant other a Christmas present. SMDH.

This Time Of Year Is Ideal For A Holiday-Themed Staycation

Whew. Did you know that somewhere around 122 million Americans travel during the holiday season? Listen, I went to see my godbabies this past September and got caught up in a crazy ass traffic jam at BNA (the Nashville airport) that damn near has me considering air travel ever again — especially during this time of the year.

Besides, it’s not like it’s a written rule that you have to travel over the holidays. In fact, if you want to play it chill this year, why not enjoy a staycation instead? Although it might seem like it’s a “poor man’s compromise,” as you’re about to see, it actually…isn’t.
