Mya Has Been Married To Herself For 7 Years: "It Was All About Getting Myself Back"

Marrying yourself, or sologamy, has actually been a 'thing' for a few years now.

Celebrity News

Do you guys remember last February when singer, Mya posted a pic of herself in a wedding gown, and the world went nuts? We all couldn't contain our excitement as we collectively wondered who the lucky guy was that the the notoriously private singer was now married to. Well, as it turns out, the picture was from her music video, "The Truth", so she didn't get married that day. #wompwomp

But, in an interesting turn of events, we discovered that the crooner has actually been married this whole time...to herself. That's right, our good sis, Mya, recently revealed that she has been married and committed to herself since 2013, and the details came flooding out on a recent episode of Fox Soul's Out Loud with Claudia Jordan.

Mya said she chose to wed herself in order to take ownership of her own life.

"I did a music video where I married myself and the Internet went crazy when a wedding photo was leaked first and I just went along with it. Because I actually did marry myself in real life at the end of 2013."

And since, she has managed to dodge the continuous questioning by having fun with the moment, and not saying anything about it at all. She continued:

"I didn't even say anything. I just said 'thank you.' A lot of people kept asking me, like, 'Who's the lucky guy?' I said, 'Well. It's not a guy at all…' It was actually really fun. Some of the interpretations were out of this world, but things happen and things get misconstrued. But it's been a beautiful ride."

Impressively enough, marrying yourself, or sologamy, has actually been a 'thing' for a few years now as more and more women are choosing to put themselves first. Supporters of the practice argue that it affirms your own value to yourself by taking the steps to live a happier life. Others say it's pure narcissism, but whichever way you choose to look at it, Mya decided to take part, and define marriage, her way.

"It was all about self-care, self-love and getting myself back after a toxic relationship. Last year, I renewed my vows stepping into a new year. It's not about anything like 'all men are bad' or anything like that. It's really about becoming your best self and making sure that you're leveling up in all aspects of your life."

Now, that's what I call self-love.

I've got quite a few male friends. Also, because of what I do for a living, I have many male clients too. While there are a billion-and-one reasons why I'm actually grateful to be able to say this, probably my top favorite one is that I get to hear a lot of men's innermost thoughts — things that sometimes they are hesitant to say because they're not sure how we'll take it and/or things they've never really felt comfortable being very open about and/or — and yes, this happens — things they never get asked their thoughts on and so, they never bring those things up.

I don't care if you've been with someone for several weeks or many years, if there's one thing that should be made a top priority for the entire duration of the relationship, it's both individuals, being extremely intentional, about keeping the romance alive. One way to do that is to cook together.

A big congratulations is certainly in store for the Jameses! Earlier this week, on September 14, LeBron and Savannah James celebrated their 8th year wedding anniversary. Symbolically speaking, the 8th year in marriage is usually represented by bronze. A mixed metal, bronze is durable and stronger than copper and iron (two symbols of earlier wedding anniversaries), which is why it is traditionally gifted to couples who make it to this milestone.

It's been 573 days since my last New York Fashion Week. That's one year, six months, and 24 days. The last time I was in Manhattan, February 2020, was just as Big Rona was placing a chokehold on the world. I would have never guessed that while I was living my best life in the NYC streets, a pandemic would soon change my life completely. Because of the state of the world, there were no shows in September and by February 2021, the fashion houses were trying to figure out how to put on runway shows which led many brands to the digital space.
