Sheryl Lee Ralph Sets The Record Straight On Bicoastal Marriage With Her Husband Of 18 Years

Sheryl Lee Ralph is putting the rumors to rest about her bicoastal marriage.

After reports suggesting that the Abbott Elementary star and her husband, U.S. State Senator Vincent Hughes, had decided to live together after 18 years of a long-distance marriage, Ralph decided to set the record straight about their arrangement.

"It's not true at all," she told E! News in an exclusive interview at the Critics Choice Association's Celebration of Cinema & Television: Honoring Black, Latino and AAPI Achievements. "If you're going to write things, just try to get it close to right. We've been married 18 years and together 21 years," she added, addressing the reports.

"We live together on and off, in that I'm shooting Abbott Elementary in L.A.," she explained. "He is at the Capitol every week, so we see each other in between."

Since tying the knot in 2005, the couple has predominantly resided in different locations. Ralph's primary place of residence is in California, where she focuses on her soaring acting career, while Hughes remains in Pennsylvania, serving as the state’s Senator.

Although the two have not blended their households under one roof, Ralph makes it clear that after two decades, the two are securely locked in. "Is that my man? Am I booed up? Do we enjoy cuffing season? Yes.”

In June, the Dreamgirls alum told AARP Magazine that the key to maintaining her bicoastal marriage is trust and open communication. “You have to have an incredible amount of trust in that other person. We spend a lot of time talking to each other. But if he doesn’t see me every two weeks, he gets a little nervous. I married the man who has become my best friend.”

She added, "At the beginning, some people said, ‘Well, that’ll never last. These two, they’re nothing alike.’ Almost 20 years later, guess what? Those people are not together. Us? We’ve got no problems. If you can get through the first 20 years, you will probably be okay."
