Need A Face Mask? Shop These Black-Owned Businesses

If you had told me a year ago that I would one day have to suit up in protective gear to go to the grocery store, I would have politely informed you that the devil is a lie.

It seems like the concept of normal is getting newer everyday but thanks to the internet, Black creatives are coming through for the community in the most fashionable way possible.

Last week, the federal government and the CDC mandated that all citizens wear face coverings when they make runs to grocery stores, pharmacies, and other essential businesses, advice that will be mandatory in cities like Los Angeles and Miami where violators are likely to face fines up to $1,000 if prosecuted.

Since there is a current shortage of medical-grade, N95 masks, many people are opting for alternative options but luckily, Black designers have stepped up and showed out when it comes to creating effective protective gear for the culture and we love to see it.

There is no better time than now to support Black businesses and these 8 dope AF brands are likely to snatch all your coins. But before you shop, here are a few things to look for when buying a face mask online:

  • Make sure it's made with tightly-woven, water-resistant fabric (or cotton) and has a filter pouch.
  • It must be wide enough to cover your face and chin, but tight enough to prevent gaps.
  • Ensure that your mask can be easily cleaned/sanitized.
While face masks won't necessarily prevent you from contracting the virus or eliminate the need for social distancing, it can help you do your part in protecting the people in your community who are most vulnerable.

From Wrapped By Nellz's printed two-piece head wrap and non-surgical mask combo to S. Denton Collection's sequin mask and turban duo, these creative companies will allow you to slay the day while keeping all of the germs at bay.

Asthma, a chronic respiratory condition that inflames and narrows the airways in the lungs, affects millions of people worldwide – 5-10% of which live with severe asthma. Severe asthma is a chronic and lifelong condition that is unpredictable and can be difficult to manage. Though often invisible to the rest of the world, severe asthma is a not-so-silent companion for those who live with it, often interrupting schedules and impacting day-to-day life.

Ever since I found the joy that is twisting up my hair with added hair in an effortless protective style that can be achieved in four hours or less (and in the comfort of my own home), I've been obsessed with simple hairstyles that are easy to do and not a pain to maintain.

Throwing some simple albeit a little messy twists into my hair whenever I want to tuck my natural hair away for a bit or have the ease or a break from daily manipulation is a welcomed change, especially when you are a lazy natural who never quite got the hang of doing her own hair beyond rocking an afro.
