Sevyn Streeter recently released her latest album Drunken Wordz Sober Thoughtz and it's sexy. I'm talking, you may add a few songs to "the playlist," sexy. A few of my favorite tracks are "Change My Mind," "Nasty Girl," and "Wet Dreams." And while this album is definitely a mood-setter, I realize that I connect most of her songs with special moments or memories. When I belt out "B.A.N.S.," I'm really yelling at my ex. And when "It Won't Stop" is on repeat, it's because it's because I'm daydreaming of a relationship that makes me feel as free and beautiful as that song. But, in my opinion, that's what music is supposed to do, make you feel, escape, and think.
Recently, Sevyn Streeter went on The Breakfast Club to promote her project and discussed a host of topics. And one of the things that stuck out to me is that she is a strong communicator. For years, I struggled to find my voice. So it's easy to spot a person who is comfortable with theirs. For example, when discussing a friendship breakup, she said:
"It really hurt my feelings because I take my friendships with my girlfriends seriously. I'm very transparent with my friends. If there's ever an issue that we have, let's talk about it upfront the second that you feel it."
The same went for dating. I mean, we hear all the time how important it is to communicate when looking for companionship. However, sometimes it's difficult to ask the important questions you truly want to know, especially in the early stages. But Sevyn Streeter doesn't shy away from those conversations either. When asked what she thought about dating a man who dates other women, she responded:
"I'd be lying if I said it wouldn't make me feel some type of way. But, I think honestly in the beginning when you first start dating somebody it's kinda like that anyway, you don't know who they're talking to. Until things get to a certain point where you can say I don't really want you spending that much time with other people. I think then, you have that conversation and be really honest about it."
It's clear that this mentality has helped not only in her personal life, but in her art as well. Recently, she decided to leave her label and become an independent artist, which she seems to really be enjoying.
"I want my own label! But, I like the freedom, it's nice. If I felt like I was going to be surrounded by the right creatives, I would consider going back into a major. But, I'd want them to have an actual opinion about what this is, and I'd want to value it."
Sevyn Streeter has been giving the gworls hits for years. She's one of the artists I truly want to see win, and I truly like the album.
