All tea. No Shade! So it's no secret that rapper Iggy Azalea has been doing the damn thing this year. She's been the only female rapper dominating the charts with the #1 and #2 singles in the country, and because of that fact alone, it would not have been a huge surprise if she walked away with the Best Female Hip Hop Artist award last night at the BET Awards. However, she lost to Nicki Minaj, who took home the award for the fifth year in a row, and Nicki made sure her acceptance speech was full of daggers and darts towards her competition, and even a few hair flips. During the speech, she mentioned no names as she made it clear that she writes her own rhymes (there are rumors that T.I. helps Iggy with her rhymes), and that technically, she doesn't even consider herself a "female" rapper:
I'm working on an album coming out at the end of the year called The Pink Print. That's not a plug, but it's a plug. My point is, what I want the world to know about Nicki Minaj is when you hear Nicki Minaj spit, Nicki Minaj wrote it [sips tea]. And no, no, no shade.
No, no shade. No, no, no shade.
(Yes, that's every bit of shade)
I used to sit in the studio with Wayne and I would literally be taking, sometimes, three or four days to write a verse, and one day he was like, 'No! You can't be taking all them days to write no verse! You gotta write your verse right here in the studio!' And that's why I love him to this day because it pushed me to push my pen. And I'm still one of the only emcees that's out here spitting metaphors and making you think and I don't even really care if I get my credit or if I don't. I don't look at myself as a female rapper because I know what I do.
Now, a little history on Nicki Minaj and Iggy. Although Nicki recently congratulated Iggy for having the top singles in the country while saying, "I'm no hater" on The Breakfast Club, the two did exchange subliminals towards each other a few years ago. Back in 2010, after Nicki performed at the BET Awards, she was slammed on Twitter for lip syncing, and Iggy even added in her two cents:
LMAO at Nikki saying she did the BET Awards live. Errrr. If you say so girl
Laughing at sh*t u can’t even do…study dat formula…cornball….LMFAO
Those tweets between the two resurfaced last year after someone dug up the old tweets of rappers, which caused Nicki fans to bombard Iggy with hateful messages. Iggy posted in response:
Listen. I see a trend on Twitter in the past week that involves ppl retweeting artists old tweets. I'm talking old, done and dusted ass ones. And although I know most artists are gonna go the silent route and ignore that it's happening, I'm going to talk to you even though I know the people who get hype off of the whole thing are immature anyway, but hear it goes. Yes I have an opinion, and no, even though I am a fan of someone, doesn't mean that I like EVERYTHING THAT THEY DO. There was once a time when I could crack jokes, talk about tv shows or whose record I hate or loved etc. on Twitter. I can't do that now, in part because you guys would make life a nightmare, and in part because it would be unprofessional. But remember, it was a time when my Twitter was just for my friends and family to see, just like yours probably is now. Anyhow I really feel like what you guys are doing is unfair. Right now in 2013.
The irony of this whole thing is that there was a time when Nicki Minaj was dominating and ruling the charts, however, she was continuously slammed in the media and the Hip Hop audience began giving her a hard time (We will never forget the Hot 97 Summer Jam debacle.) Now that another rapper has come along, a lot of those same people who would not give Nicki Minaj the time of day are now #teamnicki. It's almost like a hazing of sorts. The women in the rap game have to pay their dues before they are given you any type of credibility, and this seems to be what Iggy is experiencing now. It's very difficult for a woman to get respect in rap, and it's going to be extremely hard for Iggy to gain that respect in the Hip Hop space in a year that Macklemore won over Kendrick Lamar for Best Rap Album at the Grammys.
Too bad a good collab won't come out of all of this.

P.S. Apologies for the incredibly annoying autoplay on the videos.
