Hey, for you I always had an admiration
Congratulations on your graduation
Now it’s time to hit the real world filled with all them résumés and applications...
And this is why J.Cole continues to be our fave!
While most high school seniors were worried about snagging their fave as a prom date, one girl broke the mold and got her favorite rapper to attend her graduation. Goals!
It all started back in 2013 when a Washington Township High school student named Cierra Bosarge wrote a letter asking J.Cole if he would attend her high school graduation. The conscious rapper, who has since been experiencing the ultimate career high thanks to his '2014 Forest Hill Drive,' reached back out to Cierra to assure her he would, but of course under one condition: that she get accepted into a 4 year college by then.
I read your letter twice now. You are so strong, I admire YOU. I will be at your graduation.. only IF you get into a 4 year University. go!
Well, challenge accepted! The then-sophmore made sure to keep posted with Cole throughout the years, even once checking in a few months later to give the rapper an unofficial progress report on her academic efforts:
Cierra: @JColeNC you like my grades?
J.Cole: @princess_Simba: Very Much. Keep going
Well, fast forward to 2015 and not only did the aspiring journalist graduate high school, she got accepted into a few 4 year institutes, including Virginia Union University and Harris-Stowe State University, and officially starts college this Fall! Not to mention Cole, who is currently on tour and preparing for his upcoming wedding to fiancé Melissa Heholt, of course kept his word and attended her graduation- rearranging his current tour dates and all that, as confirmed by Cole's manager, Ibrahim.
A few attendees of the ceremony commented on Cole's epic appearance and what it meant to them to see him come, including Marc Byers who wrote:
Responsibility brings Rewards: I have a different level of respect for @realecoleworld This Young Man made a promise to a my daughters friend years ago. That if she graduated He would come. He could have easily made an excuse of being busy. But He Didn't. Entered quiet and humble wanting no attention. Living with a purpose brings Gods Blessings. I Pray for your continued success Man. I recognize your committed humility from our conversation. Your using your platform right.
Amazing! And to top it all off, the rapper also spoke to a "crying" and humbled Cierra, whom later confirmed that her favorite rapper of course didn't come (or leave) without bringing a gift:
[J.Cole] bought me a few books that he likes and said he’s gonna help me with my college tuition.
By now, it's no surprise that J.Cole is about a few good deeds. Last year the rapper bought back the home his mother lost during his senior year of high school when she and Cole's step-father separated, opening the doors of the home for present-day single mothers to live in. The Dreamville CEO also dropped by a fan's house to let and her family preview his new album after she tweeted him, and was also one of the first rappers/celebrities to head over to Ferguson after Michael Brown's death.
And as far as school, the St. John University graduate holds higher education to a high regard, even admitting during a stop on the Tavis Smiley show that he wishes the educations system would get better since he feels it "failed him."
The thing with me is I was always a great student [but] f I could go back and do it again,
I would’ve really learned the material. I was great at being–I knew how to pass a test. Night before, study and cram, go in and knock the test out. I do my work and do my papers.
[But] terms of retaining the information, I don’t think I did a good job doing that. And I don’t think our school system is set up–if a guy like me can have straight As and graduate college Magna Cum Laude but still now turn 30 and feel like, ‘Man I didn’t really retain it,’ I feel like that says a lot about our education system — that you can squeeze by and know how to get by.
I hope the day comes when it’s not about the test. Everybody learns differently and at different paces and speeds.
Everything! It's so refreshing to hear about rappers, and just people of influence in general, giving back to those that are in the same position they were in not long ago. Although it's always important to keep your focus forward, there is no harm in looking back (and giving back) from time to time.
Jermaine 'J' Cole is a prime example of that!
