Color us surprised!
With their pride and ego in the way, rarely do you ever hear a rapper, or any man for that matter, admit heartache over a breakup. Even more rare for him to use words like "depressed" to describe it. But not A$AP Rocky! He's keeping it 100!
The Harlem rapper and model Chanel Iman were one of our favorite couples to cover. They were cute, stylish, young fashionistas who really seemed happy together. There were even reports of the two being engaged. Unfortunately, it all went south and they unexpectedly broke up in 2014. While it was sad to see the pair split, no one was more hurt by it then A$AP who admitted in a recent MTV interview that he became straight up depressed.
In the interview, the 26-year-old part-time model said it hit him hard when he had to break up with "one of the most beautiful women he's ever laid his eyes on" because he knew he couldn't be the man she deserved to be with. Rocky admitted he would rather leave her than stay and break her heart. The upside, however, is that he and Chanel remain cool to this day, even calling her his best friend.
Peep highlights from the interview below:
On Chanel Iman:
[Chanel's] my best friend, man. For real. Because you have to be mature to be in this kind of predicament and have a relationship. I never really talk about things kinds of things, her and I, like that. And she never really talks about me, so I'm really gonna say much on the subject but, she's happy, and that's all I want. I want her to be happy.
On the misconception Chanel introduced him to the fashion world and upgraded him:
2011, I couldn't make it to the MET Ball [because] I was on tour in Europe. Second time I was suppose to make it to the MET Ball and perform with Kanye West [but] I was on tour with Rihanna. Last year, I finally came to the MET Ball with Chanel. So, as far as fashion [and Chanel putting me on] that's false. That's my religion. I'm trying not to get too sensitive but you gotta watch your mouth [laughs].
[Chanel] is a very classy woman, but I was born jiggy. Ask her! But she's like, really elegant and her whole style is classy. I would call her aesthetic "ballroom gowns." Like, that's her--she kills that. That's what I wanted. She looks like a big ass princess and I appreciate her beauty. She's one of the most beautiful women I've ever laid my eyes on.
Of course we're [still friends]. And we just killed this movie, Dope. Number one at Sundance Film Festival.
On being depressed over the breakup:
I got really depressed [when] me and Chanel broke up in June. I got really depressed because I knew that--she deserves better than me. That's the truth and everybody knows it. And I don't wanna be the guy to Lauryn Hill her, if you know what I'm saying. I love her so much so that I would rather [fall back] than to be with her and hurt her. I don't want to hurt her. Not that I'm saying she's some piece of meat that I could just play with. Nah. I'm just saying, just to be mature about things in life -- I do know where I am in life -- I'm still having fun and I'm young and I need to focus on my career. I still have her. She's still in my life. It's a win/win situation.
That was very mature of ASAP Rocky for being man enough to let the relationship go, knowing she deserved better. Lord knows some men will cheat, put a ring on it and continue cheating knowing they weren't ready for any type of commitment in the first place. Hopefully, when Rocky's done having his "fun" and ready to settle down, the two can revisit being together again.
