Nobody lies to Oprah! It's hard to admit when you've flat out been dishonest, but when it's Oprah and you have to confess it right to her face, woo chile that has to be tough.
Recently, Brandy sat down with Lady O for a segment on "Where Are They Now?," and revealed that back in March of 2002 when she visited Oprah's show, she lied to her about being married. At the time, she was six months pregnant to music producer Robert Smith, and the two pretended to have gotten secretly married.
The singer got choked up as she explained to Oprah that she was 23 years old and feeling like she had to lie because at the time she just dropped her Full Moon record, and she was worried that admitting that she had a baby out of wedlock would hurt her career.
Because at that time being pregnant out of wedlock was not a trend. It's not something that people praised. It was a sin. I felt like I could not be honest about that. I felt the pressure of having to be perfect. I was scared. I thought that everything that I had worked hard for and everything that I worked to build, the image that I had worked so hard to build, was threatened. I felt like having a child out of wedlock would ruin my career and everything that I built. And I'm really sorry for that. I mean, you just don't lie to Oprah!
She also told Oprah that she feels sorry for the young artists out there trying to make it today in a social media-heavy culture where people can just say anything, and if she grew up in this generation, she says she wouldn't have made it.
The opinions are so in your face. Social media can...oh my God...I feel for the young artists today because people can just type to them anything that they want to say. Negative! I don't think I would've made it in this generation. As a young teen, I would not have been able to make it in this generation. Like, that strength that you need to really have a sense of self because people just...they say whatever. Things still affect me now.
